INSPIRATION: Ira Glass on Storytelling

posted on: August 6, 2007

Ira Glass has a way of telling stories that is completely captivating. His series, "This American Life", features completely random and off-beat stories about everyday people that are both intruiging and entertaining. I've long considered him a creative genius, so I'm naturally intruiged by what he has to say about his journey through the creative process. I have to thank Neil Cowley for posting about these videos, it appears as though there are four in total (hopefully they'll stay online), but these two videos are the ones that I feel speak directly to artists, journalists, and the creative process... Another WPJA Win!

posted on: July 4, 2007

I'm a few weddings away from posting their entire wedding, but I had to share because this great moment from Nicole & Darric's wedding placed in the latest WPJA contest!! It was a such a great moment, and I'm glad the judges agreed. ;-)

Here are the judge's comments:
The warmth of this image really compliments the quietness of the subtle moment of the bride dabbing a tear. The strong sidelight adds depth and definition to the scene. It's a great overall scene-setter, too. Seeing the entire wedding party table and some of the ambiance of the room adds good context. This image also does a good job of telling the entire story. Photographer chose a good angle to the right of and slightly behind the toaster, but more attention to the white balance setting would have made the image even stronger - while warm is better than cool, this is too warm.

It's nice to get feedback on what to improve along with the compliments. I really like that about WPJA - very high standards for their photographers!!

Working.... Working.... Working.....

posted on: April 6, 2007

I know it may SEEM like I'm not working when I don't blog for a while, but that's usually when I'm working the MOST! I am very picky about my images and like to take time with them, which is why there are still projects lingering from last year. A lot of people comment about how natural my images look and how beautiful the color is, and while it may look effortless on the surface, I actually put quite a bit of time into making them that way. I spend the most time with wedding images. Wedding images are once in a lifetime moments that can never be restaged with any degree of authenticity. They are the first family heriloom and they may be passed on to future generations - I take that responsibility very seriously and since I only get one chance to get it right, I want to make sure it's the best. With that said, each image below represents a project that is currently in progress. These 10 images represent over 20,000 images behind the scenes. I am working quickly to take care of them all, but will not sacrifice quality for speed. (Note: these aren't in any particular order.)

It took me 3 hours to put this post together (which could be spent working on 30 times the number of images in one project), so I hope this will soothe my blog addicts until my next post!! Worst part is, many of my blog stalkers are PHOTOGRAPHERS who just want to steal ideas!!! HAHAH!!! Just kidding - I love you guys and I'm equally inspired by your work. I mean that sincerely. Now go and post something on your blog for me to look at when I can't sleep tonight!! :-)

Engagement: Kathleen & Rich

posted on: January 14, 2007

Kathleen & Rich are so much fun!! I'm posting a lot of the funny images, but there were a lot of tender moments as well. I think it's a great sign when a couple has no problem being silly with each other - and it's even better when they can let go and relax like that in front of the camera!

We did half of our shoot at Meadow Brook Hall and the other half a the Oakland University parking garage (by the way, I love shooting in parking garages). It was such a c-c-c-cold day that Kathleen & Rich never really got to take their coats off! To top it off, the wind was blowing like crazy, which of course made it colder! As we were walking, I noticed how raindrops from the morning storm had perfectly beaded up on some of the leaves on the ground, so I asked Kathleen for her ring and basically laid on the wet ground to get this awesome ring shot. I love it!

I've been working on being able to give better "direction" when it comes to guiding people from behind the camera. The only problem is that I don't want to give too much direction because then it's too much of my personality and not enough of theirs. Well, for some reason I asked Kat & Rich to "frolic" and this was the first thing that came to mind... too funny! (Note to self - stupid word choice!)

I like lines and different angles, can you tell?

They both do a pretty mean Blue Steel impression...

Kathleen designed these awesome save-the-date magnets which she included in her holiday cards!! For printing, she used VistaPrint. They always have a sale of some kind going on, so you can usually score things for a pretty good price. Not to mention they have a pretty quick turnaround. Check out her crazy cool graphic design!!

Both of them can roll their tongues - now that's REAL talent! If they're THIS much fun during the engagement shoot, I can only imagine how much fun they'll be on the wedding day!! I can't wait!

Sarah & Josh's Wedding

posted on: November 11, 2006

Sarah & Josh are absolutely perfect together!! Seperately, they seem like a case of opposites attract, but together they seem like they've spent their entire lives with one another... it's really amazing! Their wedding was completely about fellowship with their friends and family. They had a neat beach theme which played itself out in a bunch of little touches, but ultimately the emotions and excitement of the people are what really stood out to me.

Have I mentioned how much I love getting ready moments? I had to stay behind a closed door for most of her getting ready moments, but I still managed to grab a few sentimental shots!

I noticed the bouquets sitting outside on the porch and just I loved the pepper berries mixed with the bright orange roses! (I may be a bit partial since I also had pepper berries in my bouquet!)

I love this shot because at first you're drawn outward by everyone looking out, but then you see Sarah through the glass door and notice that she is shaded by someone's reflection - which happens to be her father, and then you realize Sarah is smiling back at him after he has seen her for the first time on her wedding day.

I always ask how a bride & groom feel about seeing each other before the wedding ceremony because it's still a very sensitive topic between many brides and their photographers. Some photographers insist that you see each other before, but I'm more of a go-with-the-flow kind of person and want your wedding to be a reflection of what you think is best, not what I think. I still find that, when given the choice, most brides elect not to see their grooms before the ceremony. So I was surprised when Sarah & Josh wanted to see each other beforehand, especially since most of their wedding was fairly traditional in nature. They expressed that they still wanted it to be a special moment, so we arranged for Josh to wait at the end of a path where Sarah would walk up behind him and let him know when she was ready for him to turn around and see her.

The intro picture to this blog is from the same moment as well. I really love this moment because it gives the bride & groom a chance to be alone together and to say what's on their mind when they first see each other. It also gives me an opportunity to really capture that moment and the expressions, since it's often difficult to get a great angle or close-up inside the constraints of the church. When Sarah & Josh were ready, their friends and family were waiting nearby and we were able to take almost all of the formal pictures in the beautiful outdoor lighting when everyone's makeup and clothes were fresh. I just love how relaxed and happy Sarah was after seeing Josh...

Josh was obviously excited and happy as well because he started dancing in the street as we were pulling out of the driveway to head to the church!! I normally would not shoot through my car window, but I just had to grab this moment that shows how crazy and excited Josh was!! Notice the groomsman looks like he's ready to run Josh over with the car!

Sarah & Josh were married at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Holt, MI, where Sarah grew up. Even after seeing each other before the ceremony, the moment inside the church was just as special and emotional because Sarah's father was finally giving his daughter away in marriage.

At one point during the ceremony, the pastor had all of the married couples turn to each other and exchange a few words of love and devotion. Here are Josh's parents doing just that..

A really personal moment during the ceremony came when the pastor pulled out a bag of Skittles!! Sarah's favorite candy! The lesson was about sharing the things you love with those whom you love and giving selflessly. It was such a cool part of the ceremony, and so meaningful to Sarah & Josh. Sarah has a great story about how Josh used Skittles when he proposed to her, and I'm hoping she'll share it in the comments of this post *HINT!*

Their reception was held at the Ingham County Fairgrounds Community Building and they decorated with seashells, sand, and goldfish! Here are a few of those details...

I just loved the sandbucket snacks- complete with cheesy goldfish!! How fun!

Their reception was all about having fun! They had guests sing for a kiss using songs with the word "love", and a few women held up scoring cards each time they kissed! What a fun group of people!! You'll have to click on an image to see the slideshow... there were some really fun and crazy moments!!

Can you guess what song this is? I think the faux Native American headdress in the back is a big clue.

Congratulations Sarah & Josh!!! Thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of your special day!!

As the days get shorter and the seasons change, more interesting things happen in the sky. I've always been somewhat fascinated with cloud and star patterns, the colors of sunrise and sunset, and how earthly matter relates to the atmospheric energy. Lately I've been so consumed with working that I haven't really made time to watch clouds or stargaze, but there are always a few moments before or after a wedding or engagement session when I have a moment to just stop and take in everything that surrounds me. The two images above are from those very moments. I feel an amazing sense of peace when I just let go of my thoughts, breathe, and admire nature's beauty. There really is beauty everywhere... if we only take a moment to notice it.

Bobbi & Dan's Wedding

posted on: October 20, 2006

Can you guess what team Bobbi & Dan like to root for?? These two are HUGE University of Michigan fans. Even though they live in California, they had their wedding in Ann Abor, MI at the historic First Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at the beautiful Michigan League Ballroom. Did the team spirit stop there? Not for this couple! They also used blue & maize colors in their wedding, and what true U of M fan's wedding would be complete without a stop in front of Michigan Stadium?! GO BLUE!!

Have I mentioned before how much I love getting ready shots?? Bobbi's salon, Brown & Deline didn't have just regular ol' coffee and tea waiting... they had mimosas! I don't ever drink on the job, but those sure looked tasty!!

Dan was an awesome groom running around taking care of 101 things the morning of the wedding!! By the time I saw him he was dripping with sweat, but that didn't stop anyone from wanting to give him great big hugs on his wedding day!

He told Bobbi that he wouldn't drink before the ceremony, but the groomsmen MADE him take a little sip of whatever was in that flask. So, here's the proof... he clearly was forced into it!

For some reason, I felt compelled to cross-process quite a few of their images. Perhaps it was the whole blue & maize thing. I just love this image of Bobbi & her dad getting ready to walk down the aisle. Such a special and thoughtful moment between a bride & father.

A few scene setters...

When you clink glasses with silverware, it means it's time to make fish-lips!

I love little candid moments like these... even though it probably doesn't mean much to anyone but his parents, it's a simple and beautiful image... and it shows off the beautiful paned windows in the ballroom and just a hint of the fine damask drapery.

A little dancefloor romance...

... and a lot of dancefloor craziness!

How DARE grandma bring that filthy name into such a fine establishment!!
