I'm Being Sold on EBay

posted on: February 17, 2010

It's quite an unusual thing to see yourself as an item for bid on EBay. I'm sure that's not what my parents had in mind for me when I was growing up. Thankfully it's for Thirst Relief, which provides water filters in areas where water-borne illness has a dramatic impact on the population. It's such a simple and effective solution that improves the quality of life every single day for people in developing countries, and every donation to Thirst Relief has a lasting positive impact around the world. If you're interested in making a donation and finding a great mentor for your small business, here are some mentors (other than myself, of course) that I highly recommend because they are awesome people with big hearts, and because they have a lot of wisdom and experience to offer their winning bidder!!

Jason Domingues: Weddings, Portraits, Bands based in Kansas City, MO - runs his business from his home, along with his wife, while caring for two young children. They've gone through the process of buying a studio space and ultimately deciding that working from home was the best thing for them and turning their home into a haven for both family, clients, and office work. Jason just went through the process of completely overhauling his blog for a new branding look, so he's in a great spot to help you work through your branding and website.

Angela Anderson: Weddings, Boudoir, Fashion, Commercial based in Louisville, KY - has created an amazing studio and an awesome team of people to help her be the photographer SHE wants to be. She is fearless, inventive, and risky but has found a way to make it all come together to create a thriving business with a dream team of support. If you're afraid of taking risks, let her share the stories of how she's risked almost everything to make her dream come true and how taking risks have kept her business always moving forward and progressing to become one of her area's biggest luxury photography studios.

Joy & Garrett Nudd: Weddings, Portraits, Fashion based in Chattanooga, TN; Atlanta, GA; Orlando, FL - husband and wife team who started out focused on weddings and have recently launched an entirely new brand and studio for portrait photography. No matter what they're shooting, they always do it with an eye for high fashion and excellence in customer service. They also have a young daughter Graycen who is always at the forefront of their lives as parents and has been a great introduction for them to connect with children's clothing designers around their hometown! If you love fashion and are looking to grow your business with local partnerships, they are an ideal couple to talk to about where you need to go next.

David Murray: Weddings, Photojournalism based in Kennebunkport, ME; Atlanta, GA - is one of the few wedding photographers who can also wear the badge of being a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He has seen and experienced things in his job as a former photojournalist that most of us will never even come close to viewing on a television screen. While he's never one to toot his own horn, he's photographed some VERY famous people and can share stories about how he's made important connections in high places. While he is in a different generation than most working wedding photographers out there, he continues to stay on top of the trends with an eye for high fashion and international flair while having a life of experiences as rare as any precious stone. David travels back and forth between a studio in Maine & Atlanta and can share some of the advantages and disadvantages of working from multiple locations. He's also really great at lifting you up when you find yourself in a rut.

Emilie Sommer: Weddings, Photojournalism, Charity, based in Portland, ME - has a big heart for charitable giving and a mind for building a strong business and brand. Her background in photojournalism has made her an excellent editor and taken her into high places like... the oval office (no exaggeration). Her nose for news and eye for passion have helped her firmly establish herself in the Portland, ME market and establish great relationships with many of the major wedding bloggers and magazine editors. She can help you figure out where your branding or business need to go next as well as what relationships you could be pursuing and how to pursue them.

Shawn Reeder: Royalty Free Music, Outdoor Nature & People Photographer based in Bishop, CA - a man with boundless energy, Shawn has successfully turned several of his passions (outdoors, photography, music) into full time careers and continues to enjoy uninhibited success to pursue all that he loves in life. Shawn has been able to form successful partnerships with companies like Pictage.com to help provide a regular stream of support for his Royalty Free Music brand, and could be a great resource for helping you identify what potential partnerships you might want to explore in your business as well. He's a solutions person with great technical expertise and could help you create a streamlined workflow so that you can enjoy more of what you love as well.

David Beckstead - Workshops, Fashion, Destination Weddings based in Kettle Falls, WA - known for his relentless pursuit of artistic imagery through composition, framing, posing, and light - he has been a judge for several different international photography contests and continually offers artistic exploration workshops around the world. David would be an awesome person to talk to if you're looking to bring your photographic work to a new level of artistry. He can evaluate your work and/or website to help you narrow it down to the best imagery and give you an idea of what you could pursue more of in order to elevate your work to the next level. He can also give you excellent tips on how to win photo competitions, if you're looking to gain more awards for your work.

LaCour: Weddings, Photojournalism, ShootQ, based in Atlanta, GA - is the dream team of serial entrepreneurship. It's actually solid hard work, but you'd think that it's pure luck because it seems like everything this couple touches turns into gold. Photojournalists turned wedding photographers who created a luxury brand of wedding photography, an associate company of wedding photojournalists, an inquiry + workflow + billing management system, and a wedding meeting space. I almost feel like there's got to be another company I'm forgetting! They are excellent at establishing a brand identity and finding a target market for probably any business you can imagine. They could share a lot about what it takes to get a business off the ground and the many different ways of making it sustainable.

I wish I could spend even more time telling you about ALL of my favorites because there are so many other awesome people in the Thirst Relief Auction that I could go on and on without end!! I chose these mentors specifically because I felt like their initial bids were really low for the amount of value that they could provide someone- so head over to the Thirst Relief Auction and snag them up before someone else does!! Thirst Relief Mentor Auction 2010

AUCTION IN PROGRESS! >>CLICK HERE<< TO START BIDDING!

Check out the tips on how to bid & win mentor auctions on PhotoLovecat.com!!

I'm up for auction again and this time I'm throwing in the kitchen sink!! If I have it, than you'll have access to it! For an ENTIRE year you get access to my contracts, marketing materials, private daily schedule, tax returns, EVERYTHING. On top of that, you get to pick my brain as often as you'd like! It's like getting the insider access of an intern, without all the work!

So, what's that worth to you? What figure would you put on an all-access pass to a photographer's behind-the-scenes operation? Whatever that figure is, I want you to turn it into clean water for developing countries. I want you to make that money go to work for people around the world with a trusted organization that is changing lives every single day. That's why I want you to sign up right now so that you'll be absolutely ready when the Thirst Relief Mentor Auction begins!

I'll also be speaking on the topic of pricing at an upcoming workshop called Inspire Boston. If the mentor auction gets a little too pricey, you can always join me and many other helpful photographers in the Boston area for this two-day intensive retreat! Check it out at InspireBoston.com.

(Special thanks to my dear friend pictured to the right, Roberto (aka Junk Culture), for helping me put my studio together last year! And no, he's not included in the auction, but you might get to meet him if you come out for a visit!)

Red Ball Masquerade Fundraiser for Miracle Providers NorthEast

posted on: February 14, 2010

The Miracle Providers NorthEast have a mission to "improve the quality of life for local, less fortunate children and their families infected/affected by HIV and AIDS". Most of their funding is accomplished by throwing party-style fundraisers with fabulous performances in drag. Afterward, that money goes to local health agencies as well as providing items families may not be able to afford due to the costs associated with medical treatment.

Their most recent event was held just one floor below me in the Western Ave Studios Loading Dock. They did a great job of transforming a bare bones space into something fancy and fabulous! While I wasn't able to make it to the actual performance this time, I was able to capture some of the people who were enjoying themselves and contributing to the cause! Fashion Show Fundraiser | The Revolving Museum | Lowell, MA

posted on: December 10, 2009

One of my favorite art organizations in Lowell is The Revolving Museum, which provides opportunities for local high school students to engage in art projects that further their creativity, confidence, and skills to work collaboratively and independently in a dynamic and diverse working environment.  They recently relocated to the Western Ave Studios (right above my studio) in order to preserve the funding for their programming and improve the creative working space for the students.  To celebrate their grand re-opening in the new space, the students put on a FABULOUS Fashion Show Fundraiser!  I was so glad that I was able to attend and help support the museum and its future at Western Ave!  Of course I had to take some photos while I was there- click play to watch the music video below (for total awesomeness, pump up the volume!!)

300 Cans for Comments - WOW!

posted on: December 13, 2008

I tallied up the comments on all of my blogs this week, which include this blog, the Weddingbee PRO Blog and the Photo Lovecat Blog and came up with a final count of 294 comments - WOW!! That's a whole lotta love and a whole lotta cans!! For convenience, I'll be translating that into $300 to go grocery shopping with, and here are some of the items I'll be buying based on suggestions from the comments...

• Amanda, C.J. Scott, Amber Hughes, Jaclyn Marie, Adrienne, & Tanya all love Annie's Natural Mac & Chese or Shells & Cheddar as much as I do!

• Sticky gave me a huge grocery list which I'm happy to accomodate: enchilada sauce, black beans, tuna, mac and cheese, whole wheat pasta, whole peeled tomatoes, artichoke hearts, green beans, kidney beans, crushed tomatoes, saltines, mushrooms
• Spam for Ed Pingol (omg, have you seen the spam website lately??)

• Ohana asked me to show my "CANS"- which I'll do later... jeez, I'm not THAT kind of girl!
• Chicken Noodle Soup for Ultimate Image
• Alphagettis or beans for Tracey Waye Kelly
• Peanut butter and honey for Mary Beth
• Kraft Macaroni & Cheese for SoireeLaura, J Castro, thethirddegree, and Nicole Hensley
• Canned pineapples for Vanita
• Spagettios for Adam Tyler
• Tomato Soup for Lisette Price
• Peanut Butter for Tracy Robinson and ShainaPearcePhotography

• Zoodles for Chris+Lynn (Crazy Canadians - do they sell these in the states? If not, I'll try to find some animal shaped pasta for you!)

and last but not least....
• Boston Baked Beans for I.P. Freely... hahahaha!!!

Several fun and unexpted things came out of this project:
• I discovered some new photographers and saw a ton of amazing blogs, including some really awesome customized blogspot blogs which will definitely help inspire me when I want to update this one! (go back through yesterday's list to see them!!)
• I blogged every day this week to help encourage new comments, which was more than I did in the entire month of November!!
• I received lots of links to my blog from other generous people also wanting to make a difference
• I felt lots of love from the people out there who might not normally comment, but are out there lurking regularly - thank you!!
• I got in contact with my local food bank and will be doing a documentary project with them to help bring attention to the need within my community
• I received a great shopping list to help me get started!!

Thank you for all the love and support you've put into this project with me!! I'll definitely do this again next year!! As I mentioned yesterday, I'll be making my donation after the holidays, when donations typically die down, and I'll do my best to document the process from different sides of the story (the giver, the food bank, the receiver). I've always wanted to do a personal project like this, and if it can bring attention to those who have been overlooked, that's even more inspiration to create something incredible. I hope you'll continue to follow this journey with me.
Hugs & Hot Cocoa (w/ canned evaporated milk- the way mom liked to make it),

Cans for Comments = Time is UP!! Results Posted Tomorrow

posted on: December 12, 2008

I have been overwhelmed with wonderful comments on my blog this week and I look forward to all of the giving I'll be doing!! I wanted to let you know that I will be making my donations after the holiday season, when donations generally die down. Part of my giving will be to document the process of getting food from the hands who give to the hands who need in order to help raise awareness about the needs within my own community, here in Lowell, MA. I would like to challenge the other photographers who are participating to offer the same service to their local food banks. As photographers, we can play an incredibly powerful role by using our imagery to inform, educate, and incite passion for the greater good of all. So please, hop on the "can-wagon" and join us in making this incredibly difficult time a little easier for all. As the economy declines, so do donations.... (click play on the short video below to watch the Reuters report on Food Banks)

You can add years of health and happiness to someone else's life by simply taking a few minutes of your time to leave comments on the blogs of all who are involved:

Special thanks to The Feds who put together the list below of Photographers, Graphic Designers, and Planners blogs who are participating in Cans for Comments.

Cans for Comments Food Drive

posted on: December 8, 2008

Video above created by the wildly talented Jerk With a Camera!! (Thank you for letting me borrow your awesomeness!!)

All week long, for any comments left on this blog (or any of the blogs participating in this project) we will donate one can (or non-perishable item) for every comment we receive!! As bloggers and artists, we put ourself and our work out there every day and sometimes those days seem very lonely when we don't get many comments- so warm up our hearts with a little comment to let us know you're out there and we'll pay it forward by warming up the homes of people who need food and shelter this holiday season!! A little bit of love goes a long way!! If you aren't sure what to write for your comment, here's a question to get you started...

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CANNED OR BOXED FOOD?

(Click on "comments" below to respond!)

Feel free to add comments on my other posts as well- I'm up for the challenge! All responses on this blog from now until Friday, Dec 12 (midnight) will turn into donations for the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, which serves my local community. If you're a blogger, don't be afraid to jump on the bandwagon and start this promotion on your blog! There's never too much love in the world!! Special thanks to Chris+Lynn who shared this project with me!

Update: 12/9/08 I wrote my local food bank and asked them what they needed most in their donations...
"The items we need the most include:
Peanut butter/ jelly, pasta, rice, spaghetti/pasta sauce, tuna and canned chicken, canned vegetables and soup (preferably low sodium), canned fruit (preferably lite or low sugar), oatmeal, applesauce, bottled or canned juice, juice boxes, baking items, paper products, baby food, diapers/wipes and personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste)"

So, I'll definitely be providing more than just canned goods to my food bank. I'm also going to try to document the process for you so that you can see how it works from start to finish!

Photo Mentor Auction Closing!

posted on: February 12, 2008

stalked by the paparazzi

****UPDATE*** This auction is now closed! If you missed it this time, there's always next year!

The countdown is beginning! The unique thing about this auction is that if you wait until the last minute to bid, the auction is going to stay OPEN until the highest bidder is no longer contested! So... you can either put your highest bid in now, or wait and stay up all night bidding. If you only have a certain budget, but would still like to be a winner and have another wonderful photographer give you their objective opinion on your work, branding, or maybe even suggestions on how to improve your workflow, shooting, or marketing- take those dollars you would have put toward someone with a high price tag, and bid on someone who's going for a lot less! Remember that all winning bids go directly to Thirst Relief International- toward creating clean water to help save lives.

Even if you won't be at WPPI, we can still find a time to chat about your business and take a look at how to get you to where you want to be! If there's a way we can meet for your mentoring session, than dinner is on me! On top of that, I'll be your mentor all year long to help you reach your goals.... all for making a generous donation to thirst relief! There are so many great photographers up for mentoring in this auction that it would be crazy not to get some one-on-one time with at least one of them! For example, you could bid on....

$5 Can Save A Person's Life

posted on: February 8, 2008

What did you spend YOUR last $5 on?

Did you save someone's life?

Every day 5,760 people die from waterborne illnesses, many of which could have been prevented with a simple water filter. You can help Thirst Relief International provide clean water to people around the world in several ways....

If you'll be in Las Vegas this March attending WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Convention & Tradeshow), you can bid on a 90 minute mentoring session with a photographer of your choice! I'd be honored if it were me, but there are tons of AWESOME photographers to choose from (I already know of a few I'd like to bid on!) To see which photographers are trading their time for donations, pre-register on the bidding site now: http://www.fotoverite.org/auction2/ and prepare to begin your bidding on your favorite mentor tomorrow at 10 am EST! Bidding will close on Tuesday unless there's a bidding war- in which case, it will last until the highest bid is no longer challenged.

Here's a tip to help you win! If you're bidding on one photographer and you get outbid above your budget, see if you can put those dollars toward winning another photographer mentor- even if you don't know them personally, I guarantee they'll still have some awesome insights and wisdom they can share with you and you'll probably learn something new!! The winning bids are donated to Thirst Relief International. Just imagine, you could help save the lives of 100 people for a mere $500!! Ever wanted to be superhero? If you win me, I won't just be your mentor for 90 minutes... I'll be your personal mentor all year long to answer your questions, give gentle direction, and help you accomplish your goals!  If you'd like to bid on me CLICK HERE!

If you won't be at WPPI, you can still make a difference by visiting http://www.thirstrelief.org/contribute.htm and make the next $5 you spend go toward saving a life! It's not just awesome karma, it's paying it forward.
