Memories of Misty

Misty, Apricot Colored Teacup Poodle
Misty died on Wednesday, at the wise old age of 15. She was an apricot colored teacup poodle who was originally the constant companion and source of joy for my great aunt, Dorcas (definitely not a name you hear anymore!) When Dorcas passed, my mom took over care of Misty, but quickly realized that Misty needed more attention than she could give on a regular basis. When I moved to Terre Haute, I was working entirely from home and in a town fairly isolated from everyone I knew, so I decided to care for Misty and thought it would be a great way to get me out of the loft at least once a day. She definitely made walks in downtown Terre Haute a little more exciting as people giggled in delight when they saw her prancing down the street.

Misty brought a lot of wonderful and unexpected things into my life. Because she's the kind of dog that people can't pass by without commenting on, she became an easy way to meet new people, which really helped me get to know my neighbors and neighborhood better. Of course the poop scoop clean-up was never a glamorous job, but it just comes with the territory. When we moved to Lowell, we moved into one of the only places that allowed renters to have dogs. We met a TON of dog owners, but unfortunately we also found out that Misty isn't so great with other dogs and because she had no idea how tiny she was, this resulted in more damage to her than anything else. Misty loved people- especially old ones, hated dogs & children, and could care less about cats. She also loved to model and helped me test different lighting styles- but also knew when it was time to quit.
Misty - Teacup Poodle

If you've ever read Marley & Me- you know what dog ownership can be like at all extremes. Misty wasn't a big dog, which meant I was often able to take her places I might not have been otherwise, but it also meant that she compensated for her petite size by producing a fierce bark. Somewhere along the line we noticed that she started to lose her hearing. She would bark when nothing was there, and then she wouldn't hear us when we called for her. Other challenging memories include the time she ate some leaves off a friend's porch and couldn't walk straight for more than three steps, the time a friend's dog took a chunk out of her side, the time a lady threatened to call the police because I left her in the car with the window down for 2 minutes, the hair cuts which were never pleasant for her or the groomers, the dingleberries, the potty pads she needed as she got older and couldn't be bothered to wait and go outside, her terrifying fear of being kept in a room without human contact, her need to have something substantially soft and adequate to lay on, and her desire to held by anyone just to get warmer.
Poodle Head, Human Feet

I never would have chosen a small dog myself- I'm more of a big dog person- particularly of the lab variety (minus the shedding). I love the dogs which are always friendly and happy to see you, even if you accidentally left them out in the freezing cold overnight (sorry Bailey!) Misty is not that kind of dog. Instead, she would express her anger or distaste very clearly if you did something she didn't agree with. She was pretty judgemental for a dog- much like her original owner once was. However, she also taught us a lot of things about ourselves and helped us become better people in the process. She was a constant reminder of how to live a better life by making sure that we consistently woke up at a reasonable time, traveled a little less and got home in time for dinner, made sure we got outside to enjoy nature at least twice a day, had stronger friendships, were kind and inviting to strangers, got our hair cut at least as often as she did, communicated more in our marriage about responsibilities and expectations, and that we should never be ashamed to dance around in circles when we're really excited about something...

Thank you Misty for coming into our lives and helping us learn how to live more fully and joyfully. ;-)

Lady Needs a Home

Miniature white dog

This super cute miniature dog named "Lady" was found by my friends Julie & Tom, on the side of the road around Terre Haute, IN in really poor condition. They took Lady into the vet for a check-up and found that she was in good health other than being underweight and very frightened. They've since nursed her back to health and are hoping to find a good home for her (they already have two dogs of their own.) She's a miniature breed and probably doesn't weigh any more than 8 lbs. (which is less than some cats I know!) If you know of someone who has been looking for a loving pet, I think Lady would be a great companion and she seems to do really well around small children. Leave a comment with a way to contact you if you'd like more info.

Sarah & Ed Engagement

I have to admit that I get a little jealous whenever I photograph an engagement session for a couple who's wedding I won't get to photograph! It's like I get a little crush on the people while I photograph them and I then I wish that I could be their only photographer! I know it's my own fault because I can't be everywhere at once... sadly. Sarah & Ed are one of those couples that I won't get to see walk down the aisle, but I'm so glad that we got to do an engagement session together!

0001.jpg
They picked the perfect setting for their engagement session - right at their own home in Brighton, MI (which also happens to be very close to my own family in Michigan!) The image above is exactly what I saw as I pulled up to the house. They were both sitting outside on their porch- Sarah with a glass of wine and Ed with a glass of beer. It was picture perfect and I didn't have to change a thing!

0002.jpg
They had the perfect porch for pictures! Why? Because there was a big, beautiful skylight over the porch swing, in order to let more light into the living room! A skylight, oudoors, on a porch?! That's definitely getting filed in my "dream home" file. ;-)

0007.jpg
We tried to do "American Gothic", but Sarah couldn't stop laughing!

0008.jpg
Max was such a sweetie, and so well behaved! Definitely one of the better dogs I've worked with!

0005.jpg
I noticed they had a clothes line in the backyard, and most people would have taken it out if they weren't using it, so I asked if they actually use it? When Ed said that he usually hangs his hockey gear out there after practice, I thought it would be fun to include a few more personal touches. Doesn't it look like Sarah could wear his jersey as a long dress?! Too funny!

Sarah made a special request that I get a picture of her chickens... funky chickens!

One of the things we talked about as we were planning the engagement session, was this 1970 Bronco that they like to camp out of and take for rides! The above picture was done using a pretty extreme technique in Lightroom, which was recently featured on the Lightroom Killer Tips podcast (I love the Photoshop guys - they've taught me a lot over the years!) It's almost illustrative and definitely grungy.. I certainly wouldn't use it a lot... but I thought it would be interesting here - what do you think?

0011.jpg
Check out that embroidered seat cover baby, yeah! What is it that makes cars seem sexy no matter what condition they're in? I'm still trying to figure that out! How about dirty toes... are they sexy? HA! ;)

Sarah & Ed - thank you so much for inviting me over and sharing a little slice of your life with me! Best wishes for your wedding day while I try not to be jealous of the "other" photographer!

Happy New Year!!! Every month I change my desktop image to a photograph I've recently taken and I thought it would be fun to share these images in my blog so that you can download them for your desktop as well! Every month I'll try to post a new image that is suitable for displaying at desktop size and resolution. Click on an image to download a copy for your desktop.

Alex's mom has two Great Pyrranees, and the one pictured above is Sadie, the smaller of the two. Sadie is such a sweetie, and so hard to resist, especially when she gives you puppy-dog eyes like these! (Can you tell I love dogs?!)

I don't know what it is about sunsets that feel so magical, but I never seem to get tired of them. It must be the beautiful range and intensity of colors. This image comes from the Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute, overlooking the Wabash River. The water levels are so high right now, that there may be some serious flooding once spring hits. If you live in a low water table area, or an area that is prone to flooding, this may be a good time to start thinking about ways to water-proof your home in case of flood.

... and if you're watching the Rose Bowl, like I am right now... GO BLUE!! ;-)

I thought about doing something festive to get me into the holiday spirit, but my favorite thing about the holidays is being with family. With family, also comes pets. I was so happy to see these critters when I was back to visit for Thanksgiving, so I made sure I took picture so that I could enjoy their cuteness here in Terre Haute too. The blonde labrador is Bailey (like Irish Cream) and the black cat is Marcel (like Maceau). These are some of the friendliest pets in the world and I feel as if they remember exactly who I am each time I visit. Aren't they cutie pies?!!?

Meet Misty

Misty recently made it into the final round of BluDomain's cutest dog contest. I think it's up to a bunch of kindergarten children now to decide who the winner will be. Misty, of course, doesn't care if she wins or not because she's a total diva and simply likes to strike poses for the camera. Her inner diva really comes out when you don't feed her on time; if the food arrives late, she'll bark up a storm about how terrible the wait staff is. She can't stand crowded places because she has an immense fear of being stepped on, so she prefers to be held and people love holding her (Paris Hilton's pup ain't got nuthin' on this bitch). She's smaller than most house cats with a svelt figure under 5lbs. She doesn't like to talk about her age, but I think she's almost 13 years old (that puppy haircut can be deceiving)! She says that if she wins the cutest dog contest, she'll buy a new wardrobe and model it for Blu's winter collection! If she doesn't win, she'll probably buy a new wardrobe anyway!

Yesterday, as Alex and I were out and about around ISU, we stopped in the instrument repair shop on campus where Kelly would give his French Horn a little TLC. Well, Kelly was also dogsitting for some friends who recently purchased a Puggle, which is a cross breed between a Pug and a Beagle. The pup was so cute that I just had to take a picture! ;-) Her head looks larger than life in this picture, she's really just a cute and tiny thing.

A few days ago I had walked by this tree but didn't have my camera with me, so I knew that I had to find it again the next time I had my camera. I was so struck by the bark and the way it seemed to flake off of the tree with so much color and texture. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is, but it had characteristics similar to birch- a light colored bark, thin trunk, and grew in small groupings. Anyone care to take a guess at what this tree might be?
