Keya & Robert Engagement
One of the things that happens to me when I photograph people is that I start to "fall in love" with them. It's a platonic love like you would have for your best friend, but that love makes me want to do anything and everything I can for them. I don't know if there's something romantic about looking through a lens, afterall it can be quite cinematic when the only thing in front of you is viewed through a black tube, or if it's the process of getting to know people in a way that just isn't possible on a wedding day. I'm pretty sure it's the getting to know people- that's always my favorite part.

I love learning all of the little things that make up a couple's world. Like the new home they just moved into, or seeing the neighborhood where they spend most of their time.

As we were exploring the neighborhood, there were a bunch of kids drawing with chalk on a pillar, so we took advantage of the lovely art work and made a little of our own too.

What I really love about Keya & Robert is that they have so much fun together. They haven't lost the kid inside and it keeps their laughter strong.

The trains have been a big part of their life and relationship in Chicago, so it only seemed fitting to really explore their relationship and the part that the trains have played in their lives.

They say the sign of a great couple is when they have certain "love touches" - this is one of Robert's for Keya...

I just love their smirks. ;)

This image reminds me so much of Slumdog Millionaire, even though this was taken way before I had seen the movie - just the feeling of the rushing train and her kind of looking over her shoulder with a smile...

Keya used to wait for Robert to get home each day by hanging out in this spot, reading the newspaper until he came home. How sweet is that?

I'm a pretty big believer that everyone needs to have a big fight before they get married. Not because you need to suffer through the anger and the fear, but because you need to know how each other handles anger when it relates to something you really care about. Does your partner fight fair? Do they throw verbal insults? Do they bottle up? Do they run away? A couple that never fights worries me because it means that someone isn't standing up for what they believe in, and a relationship needs to give both people an opportunity to have their say. A great argument should lead to some compromise on the part of both people in the relationship, based on hearing each other out, no matter how long it takes.

When Keya & Robert told me that this location was where they had one of their biggest fights, I knew right then that this is a couple that will grow old together because they aren't afraid to share their feelings with each other. To help make it a place of healing, we took some time to make sweeter images and memories of that spot- because really, there will be many more things in their future that they'll have to work on in their marriage, and this is the reminder that they can get through anything together.

Caroline & Dave's Wedding Portraits

posted on: September 19, 2008

I know this is pretty unheard of on my blog, but I loved so many of the creative portraits that we did at their wedding that I'm making a separate post for just the posed shots!! Caroline & Dave wanted a lot of artistic portraits, and they had some awesome locations to work with, so I we pretty much rocked it out!! While I'm at it, I'll throw in a few standard portraits as well just to show you that I do take them when requested. Let's start with the traditional and end with funky..

Jackie & Chuck's Wedding

Jackie... a professional dancer. Chuck... a professional actor. Their wedding... like a broadway musical. ;-) Indulge in my terrible writing skills as I work on my script that retells the day as it unfolded before me...

It all started at the boutique Hotel Orrington in the heart of Chicago's North Shore. The stage was set, and the dress made it's dramatic entrance in the hallway...

But wait! There was drama lurking around the corner! A broken steamer- primed to ruin the delicate layers of fabric! Maintenance men work hurriedly to fix the problem before it's too late! Will they fix it with enough time to make it to the wedding?! Dun, dun, duuunnnnn

The guys hang in the balance- blissfully unaware of the potential drama. But the groom senses that something might be wrong. At this point, he can only hope to see his bride at the end of the aisle!

The flower girls secretly plot to hide the dress from Jackie so that they can marry Chuck instead!

Their plan is spoiled by the bridesmaids who rescue the dress and get Jackie ready just before she needs to walk down the aisle! The bridesmaids protect Jackie from the flower girls so that she can finally see her groom...

Jackie took a deep breath and walked into the amazing Alice Millar Chapel at Northwestern University- greeted by the angelic sounds of the organ and the radiant light of the stained glass windows....

Their marriage received many blessings from family and friends...

... and by the tongues of angels.

The youngest watched from the back of the room, but were still present to send fertility blessings to the couple. (Every musical has to have something about making babies!)

The guests all cheered with joy and congratulated the newlyweds as they made their way back down the aisle! Married at last!

Grandma was pleased to know that her grandson the actor really was straight after all these years (hey.. I don't make the stereotypes, I just use them to amplify my poor writing skills!!)

And the flower girls finally make amends with the bride, knowing that they've lost the battle... but may still win the war.

To avoid any potential wardrobe malfunctions, the bride and groom duck into the green room for a quick wardrobe check before the very active third act!

The guests arrive at the Hotel Orrington greeted by handwritten placecards, family photos, and daisy centerpieces. All simply understated and elegant for an afternoon reception.

[Enter music. Cue singers. Cue dancers.] La da, da, da, deee, dahhhh...

Jackie & Chuck - thank you for indulging me and my ridiculous side!! I had so much fun capturing and celebrating your wedding day with you!! Can we do it again?? Take two??
